Most Important Books

My recent review of Made to Stick brought to mind a post I read a few months ago about having a list of Most Important Books…
The idea behind creating this list is to get beyond a simple, cursory reading of books, and transition into actually living those books that merit greater attention. Now, obviously, not every book is worthy of this! In fact, as I get older I become more and more comfortable with Nancy Pearl’s 50 page rule.
But when we do find a book worth more than a quick read, a book that deserves our sustained attention in order to integrate and apply the ideas, here are a few ideas, inspired by Life Optimizer:
- When you find a book worthy of repeated readings – Buy it! Write in it! Highlight it!
- Take a little time and think about how to apply the ideas. When I recently read A New Earth, I used different colored flags for the different areas in my life that could benefit from Tolle’s wisdom. Now, when I know I am struggling with one of those areas, it is quicker for me to find useful passages.
- Keep your MIBs handy… Life gets so hectic, it can be easy to forget about a book that might really have improved a day… if only you had thought of it!
Any other suggestions? How else can we integrate our favorite or most influential books into our lives?
