Tuesday Tips: Easy Apostrophe Wrap-Up!

photo credit: sergis blogSo far we have tackled
Before we wrap-up our discussion of apostrophe use, here’s a review of what we’ve already covered:
- using apostrophes with contractions (they’re, who’s, we’re)
- using apostrophes with possessives
- using apostrophes with plurals (letters = t’s, numbers = 2’s, or time = 4 week’s notice)
Today we trip through the remaining, very easy usage rules — omission of letters or numbers and non-standard English.
If the original rule of contractions seemed logical, then the first rule for this week is a no brainer!
Omisson of letters:
- Jo’burg = Johannesburg
- We’re = We + are
- Who’s = Who + is
Omission of numbers:
- ‘85 = 1985
Non-standard English:
- From Wuthering Heights: “Shoo cannot stale t’ sowl o’ nob’dy!” = She cannot stand the scowl of nobody.
Irish Names:
- O’Reilly
Tired of apostrophes? Good! On to the comical comma…!
